TMD, or temporomandibular joint disorder, can often have debilitating consequences, affecting everyday actives like eating and speaking, getting a sound sleep, and the quality of your life. Pain medication and chiropractic visits help alleviate symptoms, but only mask the underlying issues. We bring a comprehensive approach to your treatment by focusing instead on the functional joint limitations caused by TMD. In many bruxism cases, we recommend personalized bite guards to help protect your teeth and jaw from stress, especially while you sleep.
TMJ, or the temporomandibular joint, connects the jaw bone to either side of the skull near the ears. This jaw joint is cushioned by the disc (or meniscus), which absorbs the stress of movement and improves the smooth hinge and rotating motions. When functioning normally, the joint allows the jaw to move fluidly during biting, chewing, and speaking. All structures of the mouth and jaw must work together in order to provide healthy joint function.
When the relationship between your upper and lower jaw becomes unbalanced, it disturbs everything from the healthy functioning of your jaw muscles to your posture. TMD can occur due to a misaligned bite, chronic tooth grinding (bruxism) and clenching, or injury to the jaw. Overworked jaw muscles become fatigued, causing additional stress on local nerves and pain that can spread through your face, neck, shoulders, and back.
